WE WALK

Almost everyone walks. And most of us enjoy walking in pleasant surroundings. But finding enjoyable and interesting walking routes, especially in the city, can be challenging – and not everyone likes to walk alone. This is where WE WALK comes in. This popular initiative combines online tools with traditional methods to allow individuals to organise group walks. Forming part of the grassroots sport organisation DGI’s Move for Life initiative, WE WALK provides tools and support to promote moderate exercise and encourage community engagement.

HOW IT WORKS

Organisers, or “walk hosts” are encouraged to share information about their organized walks. First they plan the walk using an online formula, where they can specify its level of difficulty. Once the walk is planned, it is displayed on a map.

After deciding on the route, organisers create social media events to promote their walk. Step-by-step instructions, typically for creating a Facebook event, are provided, and other social media platforms can also be used to generate engagement. Recognising that not everyone uses social media, organisers have the option to print physical flyers for distribution. Although walks can take place anytime, a designated walk week is set aside each year when many walks occur.

WE WALK aims to simplify the process for organisers as much as possible.  The website provides cover pictures and online flyers for organisers to use on social media. Text fields are customisable to tailor information for each individual walk. Additionally, organisers can choose to print “diplomas” or certificates of participation to distribute after the walk.

For those interested in promoting their walk via local media, WE WALK offers guides and templates for creating press releases. These and other materials aim to support organisers and maximise participation.

INSPIRATION TO ACTION

Walking for pleasure is a global pastime, and WE WALK’s templates and materials are easily adaptableto most locations and communities. WE WALK is a highly adaptable project, and can be implemented in virtually any location across the globe.

  • Spread the word – create social media groups in your own language on your preferred channel(s)
  • Plan your route- suggest your own walking route and date and get others to do the same. Use the online form to create your walk, and it will appear on the map for everyone to find.
  • Confirm participation – encourage people on social media. Invite friends, club members, colleagues, family, and others in the local area to join. Share the event in other Facebook groups and spread the word through all your social media channels.
  • Check with local authorities – in some nations, mass-participation events require notification or permission from local authorities. Check your local by-laws.
