SCHOOLS’ EXERCISE DAY

SCHOOLS’ EXERCISE DAY is a nationwide event dedicated to promoting physical activity among children and young people. Held annually on the last Friday before the autumn break, this popular occasion encourages school students to take part in a variety of physical activities while also providing them with valuable information on the importance of staying active. Around 98% of Danish schools participate.

HOW IT WORKS

Schools across Denmark organise a range of physical activities designed to engage students throughout the day, regardless of their ability or fitness level. Teachers and school staff arrange and supervise the events, and in some schools, the oldest students take charge of activities. Organisers ensure that all students can participate and that the activities are both enjoyable and age-appropriate. The behaviour and participation of teachers is a vital part of  SCHOOLS’ EXERCISE DAY. Teachers leading by example and showing genuine enthusiasm can have a positive and motivating influence on students

The day often begins with a warm-up session for the entire school, followed by group exercises or a fun run. The day’s activities vary from school to school and can include team sports, obstacle courses, dancing and lesser-known sports and activities. The event is overseen by Danish School Sports, which provides schools with inspirational materials containing suggestions to make participation attractive and enjoyable. It also releases a new dance each year, which many schools introduce in PE classes before SCHOOLS’ EXERCISE DAY. A fantastic energy is created when an entire school—both younger and older students—move to music together.

Following the event, many schools present their pupils with diplomas stating their names and achievements. In many children’s rooms across Denmark you will find them proudly displayed as reminders of past SCHOOLS’ EXERCISE DAYs

INSPIRATION TO ACTION

Over the years, much has been learned about the best methods of engaging pupils and identifying age-appropriate activities. Materials developed for past SCHOOLS’ EXERCISE DAYs are easily adaptable for schools outside Denmark, and are available online (currently only in Danish).
