PLAY PATROL is a successful initiative that encourages younger pupils to participate in schoolyard activities while allowing older students to develop leadership skills and gain confidence. The concept involves older pupils leading games for their younger peers, which helps combat isolation and creates a safe, inclusive environment. All activities promote physical activity, contributing to a healthier school community.
Before being designated as instructors, older pupils complete a 4.5-hour course where they learn how to run a variety of games, communicate effectively, and act as positive role models. The courses take place at the school in coordination with Danish School Sport. One or two teachers also participate in the training and take responsibility for PLAY PATROL at the school. At the end of the course, students receive a diploma.
In the playground, trained instructors wear green vests emblazoned with the PLAY PATROL logo. These vests not only indicate their role in organising activities but also serve as a symbol of safety for younger pupils.
After training is complete, each school independently organises PLAY PATROL activities according to its schedule. Typically, PLAY PATROL runs on two or three days per week. On these days, younger pupils will find PLAY PATROL instructors ready with planned activities during recess.
PLAY PATROL’s instructor training programme can be easily adapted for schools outside Denmark. For the initiative to be effective, one or two teachers at the school must take responsibility for running the programme and should be present during the training. Courses should be run by qualified trainers with an emphasis not only on activities and health, but also on inclusion and leadership skills. The PLAY PATROL concept and activities can be adapted to suit a variety of age groups.
