The Danish Ramblers’ Association (DVL) is one of Europe’s oldest national associations dedicated to the practice of walking. Founded almost a century ago, the association initially focused on establishing simple shelters and hostels across Denmark where hikers could stay overnight. Today, it has over twenty national branches that organise walks and courses both domestically and internationally, and it has around 10,000 active members nationwide. The association’s work is made possible by the valuable contributions of approximately 650 volunteers, who arrange around 2,500 walks of all difficulty levels every year.
DVL strives to create an open and inclusive community where everyone, regardless of experience, feels welcome. Its values are based on the belief that walking contributes to a healthier lifestyle and that collective walking fosters a stronger sense of community. The association is committed to respecting and protecting nature through “respectful movement” in the countryside, while continuously working to ensure the best conditions for hikers. In addition to its hiking activities, the DVL offers courses on topics such as navigation and first aid, ensuring that members are well-prepared for any challenges they may encounter along the route.
The organisation is democratically run, with members having the right to vote at general meetings. It produces a membership magazine and is part of the European Ramblers Association (ERA), which aims to establish international hiking routes and improve public access to the countryside across the continent.
Today, the DVL sees its work as more important than ever. The digital age has led to a decline in the number of young people engaging with nature, resulting in a decrease in the associated health and societal benefits. As a result, the DVL now has a strong focus on youth activities, with the primary aim of introducing a new generation to the joys of rambling.
