About The Danish Institute for Sports Studies

IDAN is a self-governing analysis institution under the Danish Ministry of Culture. Since its formation in 2005, IDAN has become a leading knowledge partner in the fields of sport and non-formal education at both a national and international level. Although its activities are primarily academic, IDAN seeks to initiate public debate and analyse policies with the aim of finding lasting practical solutions to key challenges.

Among other topics, IDAN analyses the sports and exercise habits of the Danish population, the effectiveness of sports associations, and the benefits offered by municipal sports facilities. It also addresses issues such as sports economy, sports governance and the relationship between elite and grassroots sports.

Working closely with the Danish Institute for Non-formal Education (Vifo) and the international sports / ethics body Play the Game, IDAN seeks to provide stakeholders in sport and non-formal education and with new knowledge about their fields and the roles they play in society.

IDAN is supported by an annual lottery-funded grant from the Danish Ministry of Culture. It is directed by a six-member board appointed by the Minister for Culture. IDAN’s statutes state that its work should always be based on high standards of academic excellence and should not be influenced by political considerations or interests.
