About DGI

DGI, or the Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations, is a primary sponsor of Inspired by Denmark and is an important driver of many of our featured projects. Established in 1992 following a restructure of the nation’s community sports organizations, DGI currently represents over 6,400 sports clubs and associations and has a collective membership of over 1.6 million.

For more than three decades, DGI has been a leading advocate for community-based physical activities, collaborating with local clubs and associations to develop initiatives and programs for its members. DGI is also one of the country’s largest educational institutions, providing sport, health and self-improvement training to around 50,000 people each year. Its influence extends to the organization of numerous events and projects across Denmark such as Move for Life, DGI Esport, the ABCs of Mental Health, We Walk, Royal Run and many more.

The inauguration of DGI Byen in Copenhagen in 1997 was a major milestone in the organisation’s history. This multisport facility located by the central train station provided local residents with access to modern, affordable facilities in the heart of the nation’s capital. The success of DGI Byen paved the way for the establishment of similar state-of-the-art facilities nationwide.

While primarily focused on sport and health, DGI has recently expanded its portfolio to include a number of commercial ventures.  However, its main objective remains the advancement of community sports, fitness and well-being among Danish residents. In essence, DGI is committed to promoting the joy of movement and empowering sports associations to promote positive change across all members of the community. Read more about DGI here
