About Danish School Sport

Danish School Sport (DSS) is a national sports organisation rooted in both education and sport. Founded in 1946, its primary aims are to promote well-being for all school students through sport and movement and create the best possible conditions for this to occur.

DSS is deeply integrated within staff rooms, sports fields, and school gyms, working closely with schools to spread expert knowledge on the promotion of physical activity and good mental health. It places a strong emphasis on developing the skills of teachers and educators to encourage daily sport and movement among students, including classroom-based activities.

In addition to its national secretariat, DSS has a network of 15 district associations, each chaired by an active PE teacher. These associations regularly organise local tournaments, courses, and other sporting events. DSS also collaborates with school governing bodies to ensure that the most relevant educational materials are available to teachers and students, and that teachers receive the best-available physical education training.

One of DSS’s best-known initiatives is the creation of Aktivitetsdatabasen.dk, an online database featuring over 700 activities that can be carried out during school hours. This resource allows teachers and educators to search for suitable activities according to subject, grade, age and skill level. DSS also organises a number of popular nationwide events such as School Exercise Day as well as nationwide school tournaments and leagues in various sports disciplines.

Danish School Sport receives support from the Ministries of Education and Culture. Further details can be found here.
