The National Danish Performance Team (NDPT) has its roots in the nation’s traditional Folk High Schools, which pioneered the practice of sending young athletes abroad in the 1930s. Since then, Danish gymnastics teams have regularly traveled abroad, inspiring others with their skills and enthusiasm while promoting the benefits of an active lifestyle.
As a continuation of this tradition, Denmark’s National Performance Team has been touring the world since 1994. Originally known as the National Gymnastics Team, the name has now been amended to reflect the diversity of its activities, which include grassroots health initiatives, classroom visits and traveling workshops. Today, the team is recognised as a world leader in team and display gymnastics and is renowned for its dazzling shows, and performances. More than 2 million people from nearly 60 countries have seen its displays to date.
In a typical year, the team can spend up to 10 months on the road. Team members typically take a year’s leave from their jobs or studies to join the tour. Following a longstanding tradition of communal contributions, each member is required to pay a participation fee. The team normally stays in private homes, dormitories, or hostels as opposed to luxury hotels, and members bring only a few personal items with them along with costumes and training gear. Despite the demanding schedule and lack of financial reward, a place on the tour is an experience that many athletes aspire to.
The team performs in a variety of venues and conditions– from sports arenas and theatres to lawns in parks and muddy fields. The weather can range from scorching heat to freezing, and the performances must often be adapted to the local climate and venue. The philosophy behind the team is to showcase all aspects of Danish gymnastics. As such, members are not only skilled performers but also experienced coaches and instructors.
Such a lengthy tour requires team members to adapt to different cultures, accommodations and venues. For many athletes, however, the most enriching experience comes from living and performing closely with fellow team members, while showcasing the benefits of health through movement across the world.
The Danish National Performance Team is a member of DGI.
