King Frederik of Denmark

Denmark is fortunate to have an active monarch. King Frederik supports and participates in numerous community sports events and serves as a patron and honorary member of various sports organisations. A keen sailor and former member of the International Olympic Committee, the Danish monarch  is an avid all-round sportsman and a passionate advocate for grassroots sports.

One of the King’s most notable initiatives is the annual Royal Run, an open community event that takes place in locations across Denmark. This event has been held since 2018, when the first run celebrated Frederik’s 50th birthday. Today, the Royal Run attracts more than 70,000 participants, including the King himself and members of his family. It takes place on a public holiday around Easter, with events in Copenhagen, a second host city, and various other locations.

King Frederik has participated in the relay event of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, the 54-kilometre Birkebeinerrennet cross-country skiing event in Norway and the 160-kilometre Arctic Circle Race in  Greenland. In 2012, he carried the Olympic flame through Notting Hill in the lead-up to the London Olympics.
